The Exploris POS team is a team within the IT Applications Development organization responsible for developing and supporting a robust POS System and critical integrations that many applications depend on with in Advance Auto Parts enterprise. This POS system supports 2000 plus stores both Corporate owned and our Independent customer base. Almost, $2 Billion in sales run through this critical POS system on an annual basis. The manager will be responsible for the evolution and modernization of the application. Based on our current modernization strategy there is no more exciting time then now to help lead this great team.  The technology is a key enabler as we look to grow both our store base and customer base.  The team includes both core POS resources as well as integration developers.   

The manager will be responsible for the vendor management of the POS software and it will be key that a strong partnership continues with this vendor.  As the application is modernized we want to see an API-centric and micro services approach that enables solutions to support internal and external customers.  With a product-centric discipline, we must ensure we are driving faster agility and time-to-market of key features, enabling Advance Auto Part’s Mission of having a “Passion for Customers. Passion for Yes”.  The candidate should have a minimum 5-7 years retail experience, strong background in POS systems as well as previous leadership experience. 


Successful candidates will be strong leaders who can prioritize well, communicate clearly, and have a consistent track record of managing and delivering scalable, high performance enterprise-level solutions.  

The Manager is responsible for assembling project team, assigning individual responsibilities, identifying appropriate resources needed, and developing schedules to ensure timely completion of project and vendor management. In order to effectively coordinate the activities of the team, the Manager must be familiar with system scope and project objectives, as well as the role and function of each team member. The Manager operates under general management supervision. The ideal candidate is one that is not only passionate about product management but also focus on business needs and customer experience. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Customer Facing Systems, the Manager of Systems Engineering will lead a talented team and partner closely with both senior IT leadership and senior business leaders. You will be empowered to innovate and contribute to the definition of the standards, automation, and processes that will enable product teams to release features more rapidly. 




  • Work with business stakeholders, project managers, business analysts, and other IT teams to define the vision, roadmaps, strategy for the order management systems based on customer and stakeholder needs, company goals and strategy, market trends and technology advancement/ 

  • Work closely with a nimble team of software engineers and enterprise architects to ensure the solutions meet our business needs using Agile methodologies in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Identify appropriate resource needs; work with appropriate management to get resource commitments; make recommendations in sourcing strategy 

  • Ensure contractual documentation is place, utilizing appropriate procurement processes 

  • Create and manage delivery schedule; track progress in completing project tasks. Ensure project schedules are as efficient as possible, utilizing critical path analysis where appropriate; and ensure project resources accurately charge time to appropriate tasks. 

  • Manage scope - utilize appropriate tools and processes to manage/track requirements and conflicts; ensure appropriate change management processes/tools are used 

  • Manage cost; provide level of effort and estimates, ensure financial forecast is created and maintained through the project 

  • Track and manage risk and issues; appropriately escalate to management and project stakeholders 

  • Prepare and present status reports on a regular basis to management and project stakeholders 

  • Coordinate with Security Architecture and Engineering functions regarding the selection and implementation of applicable controls. 

  • Plan for and work flexibly to deadlines 

  • Maintain a leadership expertise on current technology, trends, and best practices. 

  • Working with and helping build a strong team in our Advance Auto Global Capability Center (GCC)

Technical Skills: 

  • 5+ years of a development background in application development and/or technical project management, especially in retail industry and order management systems area (strongly preferred). 

  • Strong familiarity with API management, Micro-services, Visual Basic 6.0 and .NET, PERL 

  • Functional knowledge of MuleSoft, Kafka, Lambda, Jenkins, and Maven 

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Azure and how to move and platform application in the cloud. 

  • Strong experience working in an Agile/SCRUM environment; Certified Scrum Master Certification is preferred. 

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Project and Microsoft Excel. 

  • Basic understanding of Organizational Change Management principals and ability to make recommendations for appropriate adoption of IT solutions. 

  • Understanding of basic project accounting principles. 

  • Experience with database systems such as Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, and others 



  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline; or 5-7 years of practical experience managing simultaneous projects driving successful delivery according to scope, schedule and budget; or equivalent combination of education and experience 

  • Total of 10+ years in Application Development or Infrastructure Engineering managing developers with at least 5 years in a supervisory role or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

  • Experience in building and leading teams (developers, business analysts, quality assurance testers, project manager). 

  • Sound knowledge of the principles of product management. 

  • Strong analytical & strategic planning skills; ability to set clear objectives and priorities to drive execution. 




  • Establish delivery goals and KPIs to measure against them. 

  • Setting quarterly and annual goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with department goals and vision. 

  • Organize workflow and ensuring that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks. 

  • Monitor employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching.
