SUMMARY

The Indirect Tax Manger applies solid knowledge of accrual accounting and accounting principles to oversee the transaction tax function of Advance Auto Parts.  Oversight extends beyond regulatory compliance function as this role is also responsible for the strategic vision of the Indirect Tax group; optimizing people and systems for the highest level of regulatory accuracy, enterprise efficiency, and risk mitigation.  The Manger has a thorough understanding of state and local tax laws and 3rd party tax software systems to work collaboratively with both internal and external customers of Advance Auto Parts ensuring that tax compliance measures are met.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manage the overall compliance aspects of sales & use, excise, VAT, environmental and all other indirect based taxes.
  • Assist with indirect tax audits and developing and delivering company’s position to external auditors. 
  • Oversee/Assist with periodic self-audits of expense and capital spend to assess compliance and risk mitigation strategy.
  • Perform tax research to monitor regulatory and legislative changes to assist tax leadership in supporting the company’s tax positions.
  • Responsible for oversight of maintenance of indirect tax rates and tax software updates for the POS and ERP systems.
  • Provides timely and accurate support to store and external customers on related questions.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of related systems utilized in the compliance, control, and audit process; Oracle Cloud, ServiceNow, AS400, Sovos/Taxware, SUT, various POS and ecommerce selling systems, and Supply Chain systems, etc.
  • Review and approve periodic general ledger account reconciliations for tax accounts and corresponding journal entries.
  • Manage and maintain internal relationships with IT, merchandising, accounts payable, operations, field communications, and sales audit
  • Assists with any technical or system related changes affecting the assigned subject matter.
  • Ensure practices are in place to prepare and maintain schedules and supporting documentation needed for management, internal and external reporting, internal and external auditors and SOX requirements.
  • Develop standards for coordinating work with offshore and outsourced resources.
  • Prepares ad-hoc analysis and reports.

  • Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel, and ERP skills.

  • Must be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to top management, external department heads, customers, clients and other employees.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; and
  • Certified Public Accountant license preferred; and
  • 5-8 years related experience; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as the manager of the department.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Company's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities may include training, planning, assigning/directing work and resolving problems.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS


Certified Public Accountant license preferred.
