Job Description

The Manager - Enterprise Risk Management is a key role supporting the enterprise risk management (ERM) program and will help embed risk governance and culture by driving a “risk” thought process into strategic and cross-functional decision-making. The role will champion a multi-pronged and innovative approach to risk analysis that encourages business involvement and understanding of risk.  This includes facilitating risk analysis using cross-functional workshop techniques such as pre-mortems or scenario analysis. This will be a high visibility role partnering with an array of business leaders to analyze risks and determine appropriate actions commensurate with the risk. 

In addition to the above, the role will help evolve the company’s risk analysis capabilities by leveraging data and scanning internal and external environments to gain actionable risk insights.  Additionally, the role will be a key leader in the execution of our overall team strategy with a focus on transparency, strategic engagement, and fostering a diverse and inclusive culture that focuses on people development. 


  • Responsible for supporting the ERM strategy that includes building and maintaining an ERM program that embeds risk understanding in the business to enable risk to be used as a lens for decision-making. 
  • Supports the Director - Enterprise Risk Management in performing the annual risk assessment.
  • Partner with business leaders to facilitate a structured process to analyze key risks.  This will require the facilitation of a multi-pronged approach:
    • Use of traditional approach steps for select key risks: risk identification, risk ownership, risk analysis and response assessment, gap assessment, action plan development, and monitoring/reporting.
    • Use of innovative assessment techniques to analyze more strategic and external facing risks (scenario/war game/pre-mortem techniques). 
    • Synthesize data to gain actionable risk insights.
  • Coordinate with internal functions to ensure risk is understood and managed holistically across the enterprise (e.g., ERM, Compliance, Information Security, Internal Audit, etc.)​.
  • Develop an expert working knowledge and understanding of the Company and objectives.
  • Ability to leverage and use technology effectively, including advanced data analytics techniques, visualization tools for dashboarding and Audit/GRC technology.
  • Demonstrated high level of ethics, integrity, and professional judgement in all activities as a representative of the ERM function and Advance Auto Parts overall.


This position will not directly oversee staff members and will be part of a 2-3 person ERM team. 


  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills including the ability to build relationships and interact effectively across the business.
  • Solid critical thinking and analytical skills with the ability to quickly assess business processes, solve complex problems, and work on unstructured assignments.
  • Ability to design, facilitate and run workshops aimed at engaging business and risk owners to consider and discuss risk in cross-functional settings.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, organizational skills and ability to prioritize assignments, deal with interruptions, and meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work both individually and in a team environment.
  • Proficient with MS Office Professional programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.


  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related fields from a four-year college or university required.
  • 5+ years relevant Risk, Audit and/or GRC related experience (public accounting or risk management) required.
  • Experience leading risk governance efforts within a publicly traded company, including reporting to executive leadership and the Board.
  • Experience using data analytics techniques as part of integrated risk management or auditing (e.g. ACL, IDEA, GRC technology), preferred
  • Experience in consumer or retail industry, preferred
  • Working knowledge of ERM frameworks such as COSO and ISO 31000, preferred

Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, preferred but remote will be considered.
