Career Description

Job Description

Join the AAP Digital Products Team and start reimagining the future of automotive retail. Disrupt the way consumers buy auto parts and join a fast-growing e-commerce team to take on the industry’s biggest challengers.  We are charged with executing AAP's commitment to Digital transformation.

Our customers are can-do people who like to build, just like us.  Our priorities are all about their satisfaction, trust and loyalty.  The Digital development team is responsible for building solutions that drive the customer experience and, ultimately, enhance our bottom line as an organization.  This team plays an integral, high-visibility role in working across the company’s Marketing, Digital, and IT organizations.

As a Lead DevOps Engineer, you will leverage your awesome AWS architect skills as a key player in our enterprise-scale digital transformation.  This is a big, challenging role on a great team, where the leaders know tech, where talent is valued, and opportunities abound.  Successful candidates will thrive in an agile environment, embrace DevOps culture and practices, and help mentor other team members as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Be responsible for all things DevOps, from inside the development team.  As Team Digital, we report up to marketing, outside of the IT organization.  This effectively places our customers at the forefront of all our priorities as a team.  While we partner closely with IT, and there is overlap, this role is on the Digital side, and the distinction is important.  That said, the role itself is all DevOps, all the time.
  • Design and build solutions across the AWS landscape, as we continue to evolve as a cutting-edge tech shop.  Automation and IaC (some CloudFormation, mostly Terraform) are core values here.  Please note that this is a senior role with high expectations.  Your SA-A or SA-P certification will be a plus, but only as a supplement to your comprehensive experience.
  • Be on the cutting edge of our CI/CD initiatives, our QA infrastructure and more.  Ideally, Digital designs and implements “what’s next”.  You’ll work closely with our products architects and developers.  We design solutions and stand them up, render them into IaC, and hand them off to our IT partners, who own and run production.  Again, there is overlap, but those are the broad strokes.  This is real transformation, and we refine as we go.
  • You will participate in designing the team's overall approach, and have an important voice in the ongoing strategic and tactical dialogs. You will document your work as part of your adherence to best practices and team standards.
  • Help to make the team better through peer review and knowledge sharing. Be an advocate of the peer review process, and help your teammates to grow by being generous with your knowledge.
  • Lead by example, seek consensus and help the team to be greater than the sum of its parts.
  • Play a role in the team's best practices and good governance across the spectrum: secure, compliant, highly automated, and truly integrated into the larger whole.
  • Be in the vanguard of a truly agile, true DevOps culture here at AAP.

  • Demonstrably deep, comprehensive skills and experience in the AWS environment: EC2, S3, EBS/EFS, VPC, Data Pipeline, Kinesis, Lambda, IAM/STS/Cognito, Multi-Account architecture, costing and reservation strategies, etc.  We understand that nobody knows everything, and expectations are not unreasonable.  But this is a shop where the managers are AWS architects, and the software architects know their DevOps, so there’s a certain baseline.
  • Infrastructure as Code and automation: some CloudFormation, but mostly Terraform.  You should be highly capable, and a true believer.
  • CI/CD: best-practice pipeline infrastructure, as part of an Agile whole.  Transformation is about more than the tech stack.
  • Deep experience working in data-driven environments, strong SQL, general understanding of normalization principles, understanding of relational schemae.  Your NoSQL, big data, ETL, EDI, etc. experience are all of interest, particularly as they pertain to the cloud.  It is all about the data here.
  • Agile/Scrum experience is expected, but we're more interested in actual, lower-case-a agility, both for you and the team as a whole.
  • APIs, REST conventions, solid understanding of strong, business-grounded semantics and why they matter.  Should be experienced with AWS API Gateway.  Mulesoft experience is also a plus.
  • Serverless architecture, Node/Lambda.
  • Customer-first attitude.  This is B2C e-commerce, omnichannel and at scale.  Customer-first is a real core value here, and it’s one of the things that make this a great place to work.
  • Nice to have: digital marketing tools and technologies: 3P tags/tag management, SEO/SEM/SEP.
  • Experience at optimizing architecture for e-commerce: page-load speeds, clicks-to-checkout, graceful scaling under spiky loads, conversion rates, etc.
  • Be comfortable with A/B testing, analytics and a data-driven decision tree.
  • Version control: GitHub, BitBucket, Stash, etc.  You should comfortable in Git-driven version-controlled DevOps environments. Experience with Jira and Confluence is expected.
  • Ability to handle deadlines, and gracefully cope with high tempos and the attendant stresses, to deliver on time.
  • Strong communication skills, written, verbal and visual, with the ability to work across business and IT / development teams.

  • Bachelor’s degree (STEM is a plus) and/or equivalent experience.
  • 7-10+ years’ overall experience in the web tech space.

None to start, but leadership opportunities abound here.
