Job Description

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and do not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of race, color, sex, age national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, status as a veteran and basis of disability or any other federal, state or local protected class.:

Join the AAP Digital Products Team and start reimagining the future of automotive retail. Disrupt the way consumers buy auto parts and join a fast growing e-commerce team to take on the industry’s biggest challengers.  We are charged with executing AAP's top-down commitment to Digital expansion.

The focus here is on our customers -- how we make them happy, earn their trust and create loyalty.  The Digital development team is responsible for rapidly developing and deploying solutions that will drive the customer experience and, ultimately, enhance our bottom line as an organization.  This team plays an integral, high-visibility role in working across the company’s Marketing, Digital, and IT organizations.

As a Lead Product Architect, you will be responsible for designing, engineering, and maintaining the company’s main e-commerce platform.  You will play a lead role in delivering large-scale components of the platform as a whole.  Successful candidates will thrive in an agile environment, embrace DevOps culture and practices, and help mentor other team members as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Be a hands-on leader in designing, planning and building AAP's next-generation B2C e-commerce platform.  This is not just another version number; it's real transformation.

  • Play the lead role and take ownership, being focused at any one time on delivering a major product component of AAP's Digital commerce platform.

  • Manage and distribute shared responsibilities across your team.

  • Make key decisions with respect to the team's overall approach, as an extension of your meaningful participation in our strategic and tactical conversations.

  • Facilitate peer review and cross-pollination between skillsets on the team.

  • Lead by example, drive consensus and help the team to be greater than the sum of its parts.

  • Be responsible for the team's best practices and good governance across the spectrum: secure, compliant, DRY not WET, and truly integrated into the larger whole.  We are seriously at scale here.

  • Share knowledge generously, helping AAP be a place where individuals come to grow.

  • Facilitate real integration across various components across the spectrum of platforms and channels.

  • Be in the vanguard of a truly agile, true DevOps, true CI/CD culture here at AAP.  Make your team the one that everybody wants to be on.

  • Serious Javascript: ES6, Typescript.  Strong general knowledge of MVWhatever architecture, JS frameworks including React, Node, Angular, Vue, etc.  Special emphasis on React/Node.

  • Comprehensive and deep web markup skills incl. HTML5, CSS3, plain old Javascript.  Also transpilers, Babel, SASS, SCSS, Webpack, etc.

  • Ci/CD: deep experience and building and running true, multi-tier development pipelines for rapid development.  Jenkins, TeamCity, etc.  But it's not about which tool we choose.

  • Cloud: the ideal candidate will be entirely comfortable in the AWS cloud.  You will work with infrastructure specialists in this role, but your solid understanding of VPCs, regions, AZs, auto scaling, peering, etc. will go a long way.

  • Data: you should be highly experienced at working in data-driven environments.  Strong SQL, ability to understand relational schemae, CRUD, REST.  Additional experience with NoSQL, columnar-storage databases, Hadoop/EMR are all pluses.  It's all about the data here at AAP.

  • APIs, services: building and interacting with them.  REST, SOAP, JSON, XML.  Experience with MuleSoft is a plus.

  • Infrastructure as Code:  AWS Cloudformation, Terraform.  We will seek to code and automate at every opportunity here.  And yes, you'll work with infrastructure specialists, but your knowledge and experience as a true believer will geometrically increase your team's output.  But you already know this.

  • Microservices, Lambda, etc.  You should be familiar with serverless architectures, be able to recognize when a microservice is the right answer, when it's not, and how to act on it.

  • Big-picture thinking and grasp: This is not a tasker role; this is the person who has it all inside her or his head.  The person who knows the stuff that no one told you, and for which there's no manual.  Know the angles and be in the large conversations.

  • QA/Testing: we hope you'll be strong on testing methodologies, both automated and otherwise.  Unit testing, regression testing, testing frameworks, feedback, peer review, etc., all in a version-controlled environment.  A testing mindset as a foundational component of delivering product.

  • Experience working in an agile fashion.  Note the lowercase 'a'.  We're referring to actual agility.  We do speak Agile/Scrum, and we hope you have some experience and familiarity with it.

  • Multi-year experience with server-side languages including Ruby, PHP, Java, etc.  You should be a senior-level object-oriented and procedural programmer.

  • Experience in using/integrating with digital marketing tools and technologies: 3P tags, tag management, SEO/SEM/SEP.  Again, we have professionals for this, but your comfort level and experience will add value.

  • Experience optimizing eCommerce site design to maximize page-load speeds, conversion rates, optimal clicks-to-checkout, etc.

  • Good eyes and common sense.  While you'll be working with specialists for UI, UX and design, we should all bring a sense of balance, layout, palette, etc.

  • Version control: GitHub, BitBucket, Stash, etc.  You be very comfortable with Git as a protocol, and all that that entails.

  • Experience with Jira, Confluence and Atlassian tools in general.  This is a plus, not a show-stopper.

  • Experience working with UI/UX teams to convert designs to apps. Experience translating sketch files to layout with precision

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work across business and IT / development teams

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience.

  • 8-10+ years of overall experience

  • Leadership in a team context, team membership to TBD.
