The Platform Services organization is a component of Advance Auto Parts’ Information Technology function. This team is responsible for the creation and evolution of the modern Advance Auto Parts service-based platform. Comprised of key core services including Catalog, Data, Order Management, Inventory, Commerce, Security and more, the platform will provide a structured way to develop and evolve service implementations.  Key to this approach is the instantiation of an API-centric developer ecosystem that enables solutions to easily construct consumer-facing applications by accessing these platform services.  With a product-centric discipline, the platform enables a framework to evolve back-end in services in parallel, ultimately driving faster agility and time-to-market of key features, enabling Advance Auto Part’s Mission of having a “Passion for Customers. Passion for Yes”.

The Principal Software Developer will drive the architecture, design and build new APIs, design and build integrations to existing systems, design and build API portals, and assist with the definition of technical tasks, estimates, and dependencies. You will be empowered to innovate and contribute to the definition of the standards, automation, and processes that will enable product teams to release features anytime they want.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Define and lead API governance strategies and technology adoption for the enterprise
  • Gather, understand and clarify complex business requirements Work with various systems and teams to understand integration requirements
  • Design and Implement enterprise integrations that result in a scalable, flexible, and highly available solution that performs well under high traffic
  • Design, develop, test, and implement REST-based API solutions following best practices, patterns, versioning, and iterative design methodologies
  • Understand and implement secure credential management options and proper encryption practices both in motion and at rest
  • Control integration quality and develop ways to detect and correct anomalies with data exchanges
  • Monitor integrations, properly alert colleagues and customers when processes fail or are experiencing degraded performance, and build solutions that can recover gracefully from interruptions in connectivity
  • Assist project managers in the definition of technical tasks, estimates, and dependencies
  • Work closely with peers, stakeholders, and end users to ensure technical compatibility and user satisfaction
  • Plan for and work flexibly to deadlines
  • Design and develop new API-based integrations
  • Maintain a leadership expertise on current technology, trends, and practices in API management and security
  • Work closely with business partners, architect and technical groups to review, design, and implement requirements and strategy; provide estimates for development effort

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience
  • Total of 10+ years in Application Development or Infrastructure Engineering
  • At least 5 years of API development experience (with Mulesoft/Java expertise)
  • Mulesoft or other API Management platform experience is required
  • Cloud (AWS, Azure, or similar) experience is required
  • Strong familiarity with API management, Micro-services, Java/JEE application stacks
  • Experience with DevOps technologies such as Jenkins / Circle-CI, Docker, Kubernetes, GIT, Maven, Ant, JIRA, etc. a must
  • Strong troubleshooting skills a must
  • Strong communication skills that effectively convey key messages, statuses and risks
  • Be able to work with teams with varying levels of technical backgrounds and experiences
  • Experience in supporting product / agile development teams
  • Background in systems architecture is desired
  • Experience with implementing micro-services and SOA architecture is desired
  • Experience developing interfaces to WebSphere, Salesforce, Okta, and Oracle is desired
