SUMMARY

Under the direction of an attorney, the Paralegal resolves routine legal issues. Researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treatises, and legal codes. Prepares and negotiates legal documents, such as contracts, reviews pleadings, briefs and other litigation documentation.  Researches and prepares discovery responses.  Also expected to provide support to attorneys including scheduling, travel arrangements, typing correspondence at direction of attorneys, distributing mail, answering phones, etc. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Gather and analyze research data, such as statutes, decisions, and legal articles, codes, and documents

 

Investigate facts and law of cases and search pertinent sources, such as public records, to assist in preparation of and discovery associated with litigation matters

 

Drafts and negotiates contracts, working directly with in-house attorneys

 

Assist in the development of policies and procedures for the contracting function.

 

Assist in ensuring company compliance with internal policies and procedures

 

Keep and monitor legal volumes to ensure law library is up-to-date

 

Meet with clients and other professionals to discuss details of negotiations and other legal matters

 

Prepare affidavits or other documents, such as legal correspondence and organize and maintain documents in paper or electronic filing system

 

Prepare memoranda, initial drafts and final drafts of legal documents

 

Provide legal research as needed/requested

 

Track and manage legal matters and their related expenses.  Prepare reports regarding status, progress and costs of matters managed or handled.  Recognize and report on trends and problem areas; recommend courses of action to promote efficiency and cost-effective measures.

 

Follow up with law firms and internal personnel on litigation matters

 

Drafts letters, memos and correspondence to internal and external customers

 

Creates and updates spreadsheet files and reports

 

Prepares, sends and receives confidential correspondence, reports and other documents including e-mail and faxes

 

Coordinates and arranges meetings, reserves conference lines and facilities and communicates meeting information

 

Answers incoming calls from internal and external customers and forwards calls to appropriate parties if necessary

 

Assists in making appointments and arranging travel schedules and reservations for supervisors

 

Ensures that all Legal Department equipment (i.e., fax machine and printer) is operational and properly maintained.

 

Distributes mail and faxes throughout the day in a timely manner

 

Maintains task list for supervisors and monitors deadlines

 

Creates and maintains filing systems

 

Assists other department personnel with the distribution of mail

Experience with document retention procedures is a plus.

 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to understand and analyze budget/P&L statements and manage fees/expenses on a proactive basis.

 

High level of reasoning ability required.  Ability to define problems, collect and analyze complex data and conflicting viewpoints, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, as well as make strategic decisions and persuasive arguments.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

 

This position requires frequent overnight travel

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor¿s Degree and 3-5 years of experience or Paralegal Certificate and 3-5 years of experience;

or equivalent combination of education and experience;

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Paralegal Certification preferred.
