Schedule – 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday // May 25 – July 31, 2020


The Risk Intern supports the Risk Services Department by performing essential tasks that support and assist risk management for all litigated and non-litigated workers compensation, general liability, auto, property and Texas Non-subscription claims.  The intern will also be given a specific focused project to work on during the time of the internship.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Litigated WC, Auto and General Liability Claims:

  • Assist administrative support in all Risk litigation related matters
  • Coordinate/compile documents for pre-claim investigation, Discovery Process, Interrogatories and depositions
  • Organize case documents
  • Respond to Subpoenas within designated time frame
  • Research new sources of information to improve efficiency
  • Conduct in-house research and retrieve evidentiary material
  • Obtain evidentiary materials in hard copy and electronic form
  • Utilize in house RIMS system to documents history of litigation
  • Review and route legal correspondence
  • Establish appropriate action plan to observe time sensitive deadlines
  • Maintain and manage an electronic diary system to manage open legal actions
  • Perform other projects as necessary or as business needs change

Workers Compensation:

  • Address and respond to basic questions and requests regarding claims from stores, Distribution Centers, third parties, defense attorneys and adjusters
  • Answer phone and email inquiries on behalf of the Risk Management department to requests from Human Resources, Operations, or Adjuster on TM Return to Work and out of work status
  • Assist the Workers¿ Compensation Analyst in completing the weekly Modified Duty Hours Audit process and assist with the Allocations each period
  • As requested, send out a pre-formatted survey to injured TMs regarding the quality of care and service received
  • Compile information from WorkDay, Intelex, and submit ServiceNow requests as needed

Data Entry and Support:

  • Use established formats and procedures, enter data and provide administrative support to the Risk Management team as directed
  • Assist with insurance renewal processes and track requests to other functions / departments
  • Collect internal and external survey feedback on service as directed by the Risk Management Team

  • Understand multi-state laws, rulings, and regulations applicable to state and federal court - general liability and auto liability litigation processes. Ability to apply a working knowledge of claims litigation, adjusting and adjudication procedures.
  • Ability to manage confidential information while using sound judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a multitude of business partners, internally and externally.
  • Strong oral/written communication and presentation skills; Bilingual Spanish is a plus but not required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point) and PeopleSoft applications
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, basis points


Attending a 4 year degree program focused in risk management

Rising Junior or Senior at time of internship program
