Career Description

Job Description

Join the AAP Digital Products Team and start reimagining the future of automotive retail. Disrupt the way consumers buy auto parts and join a fast-growing e-commerce team to take on the industry’s biggest challengers.  We are charged with executing AAP's top-down commitment to digital transformation.

Our customers are can-do people who like to build, just like us.  Our priorities are all about their satisfaction, trust and loyalty.  The Digital development team is responsible for building solutions that drive the customer experience and, ultimately, enhance our bottom line as an organization.  This team plays an integral, high-visibility role in working across the company’s Marketing, Digital, and IT organizations.

As a Senior Manager, Digital Solutions, you will be a key stakeholder in our entire digital product pipeline.    This is a leadership and operations role in which you, by taking care of business, will set your teams up to succeed.  Your solid engineering background will ensure your teams that they are in good hands.  This organization is fully committed to its digital transformation.  The challenges are very big, and so are the opportunities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Handle day-to-day operational responsibilities across multiple development groups and digital products: go to the meetings; resolve conflicts and build consensus.
  • Learn and master the business space, and the entire digital product roadmap.  Understand the why of what the teams are building, and be their source of the contextual knowledge that drives their creativity.  This role will expect you to really know what’s going on, and how it all works.  You’ll need to be a technology expert to the business side, and a business expert on the tech side. You don’t need to be able to do a developer’s job; but you do need to speak the language and understand the challenges.  Be able to provide your teams with the real information and guidance that they need to thrive.  Ideal candidates will engage deeply, both with the future-tense technologies, and those that we seek to retire.
  • Understand timelines and interdependencies deeply, and advocate for your teams.  Keep the deadlines and Gannt charts in your head, while your teams live Agile and doing what they do best.
  • Be seriously well-versed and comfortable in the AWS environment.  Know the tools, stay up-to-date.  Be ready to rule at the whiteboard, connecting solutions to the problem space in ways that help people to get smarter.  We cannot stress enough that this is a technologist’s role who should contribute ideas.
  • Be a great partner to your teammates in Product Management, Engineering, Data Science, Business and other stakeholder groups.
  • Be a leader and evangelist for discipline, vision, best practices and true cloud-first.  Pragmatic compromise is the right choice sometimes.  But this is real transformation, and change is hard, especially at this scale.
  • Keep pace and maintain deep awareness of emerging trends, strategies, best practices, tools and other developments in the Web tech space.
  • Be comfortable in an environment that is data-driven and revenue-driven.
  • Lead, by example and otherwise, seek consensus and enable your team to be greater than the sum of its parts.
  • Be in the vanguard of a true Agile culture here at AAP.

  • Deep hands-on engineering background, preferably across a diverse spectrum of disciplines.
  • Demonstrated AWS skills and experience, way beyond basic glossary terms.  And your AWS skills should come with underlying knowledge of systems, networks, data and coding standards.
  • Experience in e-commerce retail at the enterprise level.  Additional experience in the entrepreneurial/startup space is a big plus as well.
  • Strong understanding of modern the web development toolset: frameworks, full-stack Javascript, databases (relational and otherwise), browsers and the DOM.
  • Advanced ability to document, diagram, and otherwise capture and share ideas.
  • Experience with team-building; the administrative components of people management; IDPs, mentoring and career growth trajectories.
  • Strong knowledge of APIs, service-oriented architecture, loosely-coupled systems.
  • Vendor management, buy-vs-build strategies, costing, budgets. Your real-world experience with AWS costing and reservation strategies, preferably at an enterprise level, will be a huge plus.
  • Version control.  Git protocols and best practices.
  • Have a deeply analytical mindset.  Be prepared to make decisions and take ownership of outcomes.
  • Advanced understanding of modern/cloud DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
  • The data-driven enterprise: analytics, A/B testing; be able to get from sometimes-abstract test results to actionable outcomes.

  • BA or BS degree, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years in the web technology space
  • 10+ years experience managing growth teams of 2+ team-members
