The Infrastructure Architecture and Engineering group is a component of The Infrastructure Engineering, Operations and Support (iEOS) organization that is part of Advance Auto Part’s Information Technology function. This team is responsible for all phases of Infrastructure delivery from architecture to daily operations.  iEOS operates at significant scale supporting over 70,000 connected end points and nearly 75,000 team members across North America.  We deliver infrastructure and support services that have a clear impact on Advance Auto Part’s Mission of having a “Passion for Customers. The Sr Manager – Store Systems Engineering is a member of the iEOS Team with overall accountability for architecture and engineering excellence and delivering level 3 support in Store Systems Engineering and Administration. The breadth of the role is significant with primary responsibility for all stores servers, registers, printers, scanners, monitors and peripherals for approximately 5000 stores in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.  This individual will be responsible for overseeing architecture, engineering and level 3 support functions with a focus on developing a long-term strategy and roadmap for the architecture and engineering design of these Store infrastructure services. In addition, this individual will be responsible for understanding store connectivity to AAP’s overall network and partner closely with store applications teams.

This position is responsible for championing and driving organizational and technological change with the goal of continuously improving Advance Auto Parts’ ability to serve our customers better than anyone else.  As a result, the incumbent in this position will continuously challenge the status quo and drive for actionable insights to improve store IT architecture and engineering. In addition, this role is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with the appropriate Business Operations and IT Leadership Teams and their direct reports and serves as the main escalation point for issues which cannot be resolved by the members operating within the Store Systems Engineering team.

This position has direct and indirect management responsibility for several individual contributors in the U.S. and in AAP’s Global Competency Center (GCC).  In addition, this position will have responsibility for maintaining an effective labor sourcing strategy including, where appropriate, off-shore contractors. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining strong senior level relationships with Advance Auto Parts’ external partners and ensures that it receives the maximum value for any contracted services.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Ensure the performance, monitoring, uptime and cost of all store systems meets or exceeds expectations.
  • Attract and retain top talent; drive to make Advance Auto Parts an employer of choice. Maintain a deliberate labor strategy that ensures we have the right skill available, at the right time and at the right cost structure.
  • Manage the staff of the Store Systems Engineering team in the U.S. and GCC, including employee motivation, hiring and terminating, writing reviews, preparing performance evaluations and individual development plans.
  • Work across individuals/teams to ensure an issue is resolved as quickly and correctly as possible. Follow up on work required by others to ensure they are doing their part. Be the single point of contact, do not “pass off”. Take broad personal accountability for outcomes.
  • Design and define a strategy and roadmap around Store Systems infrastructure. Lead engineering teams in the development, execution and evaluation of this strategy.
  • Deliver exceptional engineering design to all consumers of Store Systems technologies following SDLC or agile methodologies.
  • Ensure that automation is leveraged to scale processes horizontally.
  • Define and continuously improve SOPs, SLAs and KPI metrics for the Store Systems Engineering team.
  • Lead/participate in vendor management initiatives with a primary focus on continuous improvement of vendor service delivery.
  • Perform trend-analysis and develop action plans for improving system stability and reducing costs.
  • Coordinate across engineering teams, manage relationships with key stakeholders and instigate change initiatives that drive the teams and business forward.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
  • Minimum of 12 years direct IT leadership experience
  • Minimum of 10 years expertise in retail store system technologies. Preference is in Windows and Linux.
  • Experience in point of sale and supporting store systems for large retail operations is a plus.
  • Ability to understand technical product and process characteristics and requirements and effectively utilize that understanding within the business systems environment to support product lifecycle requirements.
  • Strong competency in requirements analysis, design, testing, training and support with direct user experience.
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated application of key ITIL management practices
  • Direct experience with developing and operating flexible labor strategies, including out-sourcing / off-shoring


This position will supervise the Store Systems Engineering team within the Infrastructure Architecture and Engineering group of iEOS organization for Advance.
