SUMMARY

The Senior Manager, Professional Pricing, will support the development and implementation of profitable pricing strategies and tactics for the multi-billion dollar Advance Professional business.  This position is responsible for providing oversight and management of team members that support the Professional Sales (Field) and National Account Sales teams.  The Sr. Manager will oversee the approval and execution of overall- and customer-specific price programs and will interface with numerous cross-functional partners, including Pro Sales, Merchandising, Marketing, Store Operations, and IT for effective pricing strategy development and execution.  The position will supervise and develop a team of Pricing Analysts and Specialists in support of the team and organization mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Hire, train and develop a team of Strategic Pricing Analysts and Specialists who will manage price strategy and execution for specific business units (either by geographic region or national customer account).  Oversee processes and systems that enable development of pricing proposals along with the ability to execute proposals as needed/approved.
  • Train team members to understand the merchandising products and categories, as well as the Professional sales regions and customer base. Enable the pricing team to confidently apply this knowledge to create effective pricing strategy and tactics.
  • Become a 'super user' of the available pricing systems, including standard pricing, exception pricing, price optimization, and available reporting systems.  Become proficient in all Professional Pricing system functions and processes, and build a basic knowledge of the methodology and science applied to generate forecasts from pricing actions.  Achieve the highest level of certification offered for the pricing system and stay apprised of all updates.
  • Work closely with Field and National Accounts Sales leaders, Merchants and Finance leaders to develop effective pricing strategies.  Train Pricing Analysts to run precise pricing scenarios and present proposals that support sales and margin goals.  Engage Sales and Pricing leaders for approval where required.
  • Work closely and maintain contact with 3rd party pricing system vendor and AAP-internal systems teams to ensure pricing systems operate as expected.  Provide direction to these teams to resolve data processing issues in a timely manner.  Escalate issues through the chain of command to resolve issues with extreme urgency.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Exhibit leadership skills in working with direct reports, supervisors and peers. Delegate tasks in such a manner that resources are allocated most efficiently and all projects are completed on time.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams at all levels of a complex organization as a management representative of Professional Pricing.  Active involvement in projects and updates that affect pricing will be necessary to support the best interests of both Professional Sales and Category Merchants.  Report and follow up as necessary with the Director of Professional Pricing on action items and issues that arise in such meetings.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary with the expectation that Advance Auto Parts will be represented with the highest level of decorum and professionalism and that costs will be managed efficiently.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics or Computer Information Systems.
  • An MBA or Master’s degree in the above disciplines is preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 7 years Pricing Strategy and Operations experience
  • At least 3 years of management experience
  • Experience applying pricing in B2B contexts is a plus

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Strong analytical skills, including demonstrated financial acumen and ability to generate business insight complex and/or disparate sources of information.
  • Strong skills with MS Office; Specific experience with Excel, MS Access and SQL (in any environment).
  • Strong project management skills and ability to effectively handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, gross margin, balance of sales and percentages.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and statistics.
  • Experience with Salesforce.com is a plus, but not required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Strong communication skills, including ability to effectively articulate points-of-view to peers and executives.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from direct reports, stores, managers and corporate leadership both in individual and group environments.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, and professional journals.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must demonstrate business acumen in understanding and applying corporate and category goals, strategies and initiatives.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Ability to achieve basic user, advanced user and administrator certifications on price and promotion optimization systems within 12 months of hire date.  Must possess a current driver's license.
